Recover After Hiking in Sedona
7/30/2026
Recovery advice is usually either useless ("listen to your body") or a sales pitch. Here is the practical version, in the order that matters.
## 1. Get out of the sun and stop the loss
Recovery starts the moment you stop sweating faster than you can drink. Shade, air conditioning, and rest come before anything you swallow.
## 2. Rehydrate steadily — with electrolytes
The mistake is chugging a litre of plain water, feeling sloshy, and stopping. In Sedona's dry air you lose sodium along with water, and replacing water alone dilutes what's left. Drink steadily over two to three hours and include electrolytes: a sports drink, an electrolyte packet, or bouillon all work.
## 3. Eat real food
Salt, carbohydrate, and something with substance. Appetite is often suppressed after heat exertion; eat anyway, modestly.
## 4. Sleep at altitude honestly
Sedona sits around 4,350 feet. First-night sleep is often worse than at home, and fatigue compounds dehydration the next day. Plan the hardest hike for the middle of the trip, not the morning after you arrive.
## When an IV actually earns its price
If you are hours past the hike and still have a pounding headache, nausea that makes drinking miserable, or you feel lightheaded when you stand, your deficit is bigger than sipping will fix in an afternoon. IV rehydration puts a litre of saline and electrolytes into circulation in about 40 minutes, bypassing a stomach that is not cooperating — that is its entire, legitimate advantage. Delivered at your hotel or rental anywhere in Sedona and the Verde Valley, it turns a written-off day back into a vacation day. If you are mildly tired and keeping fluids down, save the money — we say the same on our Questions page.
## Red flags — skip the drip, get medical care
Confusion, fainting, a racing heart at rest, no sweating despite heat, or a temperature that stays high: that is heat exhaustion tipping toward heat stroke. That is an emergency department problem — call 911. No wellness service, ours included, is the right answer for it.
